Literacy and Library

KBA library is open daily to all students at 8am, break time, lunch time and after school every Monday to Thursday. Students can take out, return, and renew books by visiting the library at these times.

We are proud that our library is used as a teaching and working area by primary, secondary students and staff.

United Learning Key Stage 3 Glossary

Students are encouraged to use this glossary of subject specific words to supplement their learning.  This glossary of terms can also be found on students’ Chromebooks in the Literacy bookmark.

Accelerated Reader™

Accelerated Reader (AR) is used for all students in years 7-9 to improve their literacy levels.  Accelerated Reader is a powerful tool for monitoring and managing independent reading practice and motivating reading for pleasure. AR motivates pupils of all abilities to read more and challenging books, raise literacy standards and develop a lifelong love of reading. Reading for 20 minutes a day can improve your child’s reading ability and help them to be more successful in all subject areas.

Every student in years 7-9 will have an independent reading level and target to achieve each term.  Students are given 20 minutes DEAR time (drop everything and read) every day in school. In addition to this, students have a lesson in the library every 2 weeks to ensure they have ample time to achieve these targets.

DEAR – Drop Everything and Read

All students in Years 7-9 are given 20 minutes a day to drop everything and read. This time is used to support AR but also to foster a love for reading. Both staff and students use this time to drop everything and read books for pleasure.

Form Time Reading

Form time reading (FTR) has been introduced to students in years 7-10 to promote reading for pleasure and to support KBA in becoming a reading rich school.  Students are exposed to a range of text types and challenging material. The programme promotes fluency, development of vocabulary and comprehension with form tutors leading these sessions and modelling excellent reading. This term students are reading ‘Private Peaceful’, ‘Wonder’, ‘The Outsiders’ and ‘Boys Don’t Cry.
