At Kettering Buccleuch Academy, Mathematics is taught in accordance with the updated National Curriculum requirements (2014). Essential mathematical skills are developed through a mastery approach, whereby the children are given the opportunity to develop and embed key skills and provided with opportunities to challenge and extend their thinking. Mathematic sessions are taught on a daily basis and children use a range of methods: concrete, pictorial and abstract, to ensure that their understanding is fully embedded. We make learning experiences enjoyable, motivating and exciting, using a variety of teaching methods, including whole class, group work, paired and individual. Targeted group work and interventions are used to ensure that all children can progress and feel successful within the subject.
EYFS
Mathematics is taught in accordance with the Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework, which sets out the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years of age. Mathematics is taught within a rich and stimulating environment and through carefully planned activities, which are adult-led and child specific. Learning is very practical both inside and outside the classroom and children are given opportunities to apply what they have learned in structured sessions during their continuous provision. Mathematical talk, exploration through play and observation is key to the development of confident mathematicians within the Early Years Setting. Each child is assessed on a continuous basis and has a personalised learning checklist to ensure that they are progressing at their own pace while fostering an enjoyment for the subject within an environment which promotes curiosity and independent thinking.
KS1
Mathematics is taught in accordance with the updated National Curriculum and end of year expectations. Children are given a rich opportunity to complete practical investigations and written work. Concrete materials and visual representations are widely used to support their conceptual understanding – particularly in developing a secure sense of number sense – before progressing towards abstract methods. Opportunities to apply reasoning and problem solving skills are promoted throughout the Key Stage, and children are assessed in line with Age Related Expectations. Assessment is an integral part of the curriculum and every lesson, to ensure that all children are progressing and are being challenged. At the end of Year 2, the children’s final attainment is based on teacher assessment.
KS2
Mathematics is taught in accordance with the updated National Curriculum and end of year expectations. Children are given a rich opportunity to complete practical investigations and written work. Concrete materials and visual representations are widely used to support their conceptual understanding – particularly in developing a secure sense of number sense – before progressing towards abstract methods. Opportunities to apply reasoning and problem solving skills are promoted throughout the Key Stage, and children are assessed in line with Age Related Expectations. Assessment is an integral part of the curriculum and every lesson, to ensure that all children are progressing and are being challenged. At the end of Year 6, the children’s progress and attainment is assessed based upon their SATs scores (Statutory Assessment Tests).
