Special Educational Needs and Disability

At Kettering Buccleuch Academy, all pupils are valued equally, regardless of where their abilities lie, with the academy being committed to developing ‘the best in everyone’. All students are entitled to have access to a broad and balanced curriculum.  Within its aims, Kettering Buccleuch Academy is committed to equal opportunities, with students being encouraged to achieve their full potential, whatever their academic or physical ability, through the provision of a balanced and challenging curriculum.

Identification of need is assessed using a range of base line assessments such as Early years foundation stage (EYFS) profile, baseline assessments when students start at KBA, Cognitive Ability Tests (CATs), end of Key Stage tests (SATs), progress data from the teachers and individual assessments carried out by the SEN team. Referrals for support from the SEN team can be made by teachers, parents/carers or students. Requests for outside professional support is made by the SENCO in accordance with the Code of Practice (2015).

The SEN team provides additional strategies and support for students who have been identified as having Special Educational Needs. In accordance with the SEN code of Practice (2015), children identified as having additional needs require provisions to be made that are “additional to and different from” the core provision of the academy.

Students identified needs are supported by targets that are planned and detailed on the individual pupils’ profile. Provision provided to meet a pupils’ target is also recorded on the whole academy provision map and the progress of the child assessed.

Support for students is provided in other ways depending on the needs of students but could be through:

  • Small group mentoring or intervention
  • Alternative curriculum choices
  • Access Arrangements for examinations
  • Support from Academy Nurse
  • Support from Outside Specialists such as the specialist support service
  • Support for parents
  • Specialist resources or programmes
  • 1:1 mentoring or tutoring

The SEN department is led and manged by the Special Educational Needs Coordinator. The Special Educational Needs Coordinator is supported by the Assistant to the SENCO and the SEN administrator

We work in partnership with young people, parents/carers and other agencies to ensure policies and practices keep the young person central to decision making and that we support them throughout their education at KBA. In doing this we will take time in producing documents and developing provision through the graduated approach in co-production with our young people and their parents/carers.
