Department Leader: Andy Major

Welcome to the business department. We are a group of experienced teachers who are passionate about our subject. You cannot escape from business, it is everywhere and affects everyday life. It is important to understand the impact that it has on your life and this is what we aim to do.

Every day there are news stories that directly relate to the world of business and we will refer to them regularly so that you can understand how it all fits together and question what is going on and why.

We will also look at the key areas that make sure a business is successful and how they contribute to that success. These include finance (the money is VERY important!); marketing (how you let people know about your business and product); human resources (the people who work for the business) and operations (making the product). You will see how these areas work together to make a winning formula.

We are a real life subject that you will use for the rest of your life. The lessons that you learn in business will shape what happens to you for your career and afterwards!

BTEC Firsts Business

This will be your first steps towards a career in the business world. You will learn essential skills such as business enterprise, project management, selling and promoting a brand and financial awareness, from planning to making a profit. You will learn communication skills which can be applied in lots of different situations and across many different business functions.

Specifically, you will understand what a business is and what it does. The term refers to anything from a sole trader to a multinational corporation selling products to millions of people all over the world. You will learn business terminology, what businesses do, trends that affect them, how they operate and the factors that influence their success.  You will also investigate how a business makes a profit, when they spend money they incur costs and how this impacts on businesses.

You will benefit from watching the news, especially when it refers to the economy and also from reading a newspaper that looks at business news. By visiting businesses, you will get a better understanding of how different businesses operate and what services they offer.

Applied Business GCSE Edexcel

The business world is constantly changing and this course will give you a broad understanding of all the key elements involved in business. The course is split into 60% controlled assessment and 40% for an external, one hour exam.

There are three units that comprise the controlled assessment and by studying them you will understand the general principles behind business, what an entrepreneur is, the different types of business, what aims and objectives are and how they impact on a business. In the second unit you will focus more on how organisations are structured, different functional areas, what communication is and how the different functional areas communicate. Finally, you will study stakeholders, how they influence a business and then you will look into two important stakeholders in more detail – customers and employees and how they affect a business.

The examined unit is all about a critical area within business – finance. You will know how businesses place orders and the process they go through to achieve successful ordering, you will also get a thorough understanding of how a business makes money and keeps track of where money goes.

You will benefit from watching the news, especially when it refers to the economy and also from reading a newspaper that looks at business news. By visiting businesses, you will get a better understanding of how different businesses operate and what services they offer.
