The KBA Curriculum:

Our aim is to provide a first-class education which brings out the best in our students and prepares them for taking successful next steps.  The curriculum aims to provide pupils with the confidence to understand and shape the world around them.  The collective work from all areas is to deliver learning that allows students to be positive, active and economically self-sufficient citizens, and to ‘enter into the conversation of mankind’ (Michael Oakeshott).

We deliver a curriculum that starts in EYFS with an emphasis on mastering key subject elements over time.  Knowledge-rich learning maximises student’s cognitive development and nourishes the whole person and encourages the talents of the individual. The mastery curriculum both liberates and empowers, and it uses retrieval practice to develop previously learned content into deeper understanding retained in long term memory.  The sequencing of subjects delivered in both phases of the academy has been carefully planned and implemented with specialist primary and Secondary staff collaborating so KBA students can build on discrete and substantive knowledge from Early Years all the way through to the Sixth Form. This allows key knowledge to be revisited in a sequential manner and then to be built upon over time.

In addition to core subjects, we offer a broad range of subjects including Art, Drama, Design Technology, Humanities, ICT, MFL, Music and RE to all students from Early Years to Key Stage 3 to ensure our ambitious curriculum remains broad and balanced for as long as possible, with an emphasis on the power of knowledge.  For many years we have insisted on a 3-year Key Stage 3 to ensure the curriculum remains as broad as possible ahead of GCSE options. The vast majority of our students continue to study a langue to GCSE level alongside a wide range of GCSE and Vocational subjects to ensure all students can be successful.

Social, moral, spiritual and cultural aspects of learning are embedded into our programmes of study as well as a through a wide range of bespoke collapsed days, cultural trips and residential opportunities that contribute to preparing our pupils for life in modern Britain.
